Introduction

    • Les bougies sont faciles à repérer sur le côté gauche de la moto.

    • La procédure pour enlever les bougies d'allumage est la même pour le cylindre avant et arrière, et chaque bougie d'allumage peut être remplacée en premier. Ce tutoriel montrera comment retirer et installer la bougie d'allumage dans le cylindre arrière.

    • Retirez délicatement le fil de la bougie. Ne tirez pas sur le fil, serrez le capuchon de la bougie et tirez-le avec le fil.

    • Utilisez une douille 11/16 "pour dévisser la bougie d'allumage en tournant dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d'une montre.

    • Certaines bougies de rechange qui s'adaptent au Sportster utilisent une douille légèrement plus grande de 18 mm.

    • Retirez la bougie d'allumage du cylindre.

    • Inspectez toujours vos nouvelles bougies avant de les installer. Vérifiez l'écart sur vos bougies d'allumage de remplacement avec une jauge d'épaisseur. Il devrait être réglé sur 0,040 pouces (1,016 mm).

    • Si elles ne sont pas pré-installés, assurez-vous que la rondelle compression et l'écrou terminal sont installés.

    Pro tip, add some anti seize compound to the plug threads or the plugs may seize in the cylinder head next time you remove them.

    • Installez la nouvelle bougie dans sa cavité à la main et serrez toujours à la main jusqu'à ce qu'elle entre en résistance.

    • À l'aide d'une clé dynamométrique, serrer la bougie aux bonnes spécifications appropriées.

    • Lors de l'installation des bougies d'allumage le couple approprié est important. Trop lâche, il peut provoquer des vibrations ou des fuites ; Trop serré, vous risquez d'abîmer la culasse. Le couple correct est compris entre 122 et 163 Nm.

    • Réinstallez votre fil d'allumeur en le poussant fermement sur la nouvelle bougie.

    • Assurez-vous que le capuchon soit bien emboité sur la bougie. Vous pouvez habituellement ressentir un clic définitif lorsqu'il est installé correctement.

    I have a Harley Davidson Xr1200x Sportster which I just got. Changed the oil also tranny & filter as I couldn't find last date of service coang of oil. So yesterday I checked the spark plugs they were clean. But the mechanic cleaned them & said the needed gap them as one was too narrow. Mind you I had no issues at all. Gapped them at 0.40 now I'm not getting the same smooth sound or feel as if it's miss firing. I have iridium spark plugs okn my bike should I change them to NGK or get another set of iridium spark plugs.please advise..

    A spark plug Gap is to be checked with a wire feeler gauge, not a flat feeler gauge….

Just for information, particularly in the UK, you may be able to purchase sparking plugs cheaper at a Chandlers, as there are quite a few 4-stroke outboard engines use these plugs.
